Nine Parts of Speech and Their Roles

Noun: Names a person, place, thing, or idea. Acts as the subject, object, or complement in a sentence.

Example: Priya, book, happiness

Role: Identifies who or what the sentence is about or what is affected.

Pronoun: Replaces a noun to avoid repetition. Refers to a person, place, or thing.

Example: she, it, they

Role: Acts as a substitute for a noun, serving as subject, object, or possessive.

Verb: Expresses action, occurrence, or state of being. Shows what the subject does or is.

Example: run, is, think

Role: Drives the sentence by describing the action or state.

Adjective: Describes or modifies a noun, indicating its quality, quantity, or extent.

Example: beautiful, big, three

Role: Adds detail to nouns, making them specific or vivid.

Adverb: Modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb, describing how, when, where, or to what extent.

Example: quickly, very, yesterday

Role: Enhances the meaning of verbs, adjectives, or adverbs.

Preposition: Shows the relationship of a noun/pronoun to another word, often indicating place, time, or direction.

Example: in, on, at

Role: Connects nouns/pronouns to other parts of the sentence.

Conjunction: Joins words, phrases, or clauses, showing relationships like addition or contrast.

Example: and, but, because

Role: Links ideas to form complex or compound sentences.

Interjection: Expresses emotion, surprise, or exclamation, often standing alone.

Example: Wow!, Ouch!, Hey!

Role: Adds emotional tone or emphasis.

Determiner: introduces the noun. Includes - articles, demonstratives, numbers, measuring words, possessive pronouns and such. 

Example: a, an, this, that, my, five , sixth 

Role: adds clarification to the idea.

Analysis:


Interjection: Wow (expresses surprise)

Pronoun: she (replaces a noun, e.g., Priya)

Adverb: quickly (modifies read), happily (modifies smiled)

Determiner: this (specifies book)

Adjective: big (describes book)

Noun: book (thing), history (thing/idea)

Preposition: on (relates book to history)

Conjunction: and (joins clauses)
